1887 Duckcreek Church Member List

Old church records are often difficult to find or are non-existent. The exceptions are Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and Quaker records. For example, for centuries Lutherans have recorded baptisms, marriages, deaths, confirmations, and sometimes even some additional information. Many other denominations did not keep those types of records and if they did the records often left with the pastor or the church record custodian and cannot be located today.

So it is a treat to have a few early records from Duckcreek Church, Blackcreek Township’s the first church.

Duckcreek Church was established in 1858 as a radical U.B. church but in 1878 they left the U.B. denomination and joined with the Methodists. The church is no longer standing but was located a couple miles north of Chatt on State Route 49, in Mercer County, Ohio.

Below is the Duckcreek Church Member List from 15 September 1887. The first column is STATE IN LIFE [married, single, widowed], then NAME and RESIDENCE.

Thank you for this list and I look forward to your next names release. Roebucks and Oakley names are in my family tree. Clarissa Presho married a Thompson Roebuck in mid 1850. Her family is buried in Pleasant Mills Cemetery in St. Mary’s Township, Pleasant Mills, Indiana. (Border of W Ohio and East Indiana.) My family were Methodists: Henry Frazier, William C. and Henry Adams Tindall’s, Asa and Alden Presho’s, Henry Reichard’s, John Mc Gill’s, Jacob F. Harker’s (Hoeriger’s) and Thompson Roebuck’s. Tindall families were early 1800’s settlers and original Pioneers that cleared land in Wilshire, Van Wert, Ohio and Asa, Alden, John Wesley and Alonzo C.Presho’s in Union Township, Mendon, Mercer county 1836 as farmers. Henry A. Tindall married a Sarah Presho and Elmer Tindall married a Harker/ McGill family member. I have come twice in last 3 years to Fort Wayne, Decatur, Indiana, Willshire, Ohio and Union Township, Mercer Ohio and used Inscription Cemetery records to locate family plots. I am coming from Oregon soon to visit the wonderful Genealogy Library again in Fort Wayne. I am still working extensively on the Asa Presho families (buried in their Hamilton-Bethel church cemetery) and Tomlinson Cemeteries in Mercer county and Asa’s wife Deliverance “Delia” Briggs Presho buried with her daughter’s family the Roebucks in Pleasant Mills Cemetery. Many of the Roebucks are buried near Duck Creek. Love this work. You graciously allowed me to have a copy of the Land/Lot properties included in Willshire, Van Wert, Ohio. I drove by and took pictures of the lands in Wilshire and Mendon, Mercer Ohio. Love to locate family pictures of my family in Church gatherings. Thank you for all you do!

    1. What a rich history and long list of local ancestors you have! I recognize many of your surnames. I am glad to hear the land maps worked out and helped you locate some of the properties. Continued success with your research and thanks for writing! [Note: I reformatted today’s Duckcreek member list a few minutes ago and hopefully it will look better on the blog post.]

I always enjoy your posts. I was reading the membership list of the Duckcreek to see if there were familiar family names. Much to my surprise, I discovered Jerry’s great great grandmother, Minerva Tinkham , on the list!

    1. How cool is that! They have a long-standing connection to that church body. Thanks for writing!
