This is the tombstone of L. William and Mina K. (Gunsett) Schumm, located in row 3 of Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Schumm, Van Wert County, Ohio. The marker is inscribed:

“William” Lorenz Schumm was born 16 August 1884, the ninth and last child born to Frederick (Jr) and Margaret (Ehrenmann) Schumm. He was baptized at home on 24 August 1884 with William Schumm and Ferdinand Schumm serving as his sponsors.

William’s mother Margaret (Ehrenmann) Schumm died of heart disease on 27 June 1885, less than a year after William‘s birth. William’s father Frederick married Maria Catharine Buechner on 6 September 1888.

The Frederick Schumm Jr family in 1900, the first census William was enumerated in, at the age of 15: Frederick, 56; Mary, 39; Hugo A, 24; Leona B, 22; Henrietta A, 20; Lawrence W [William], 15; Amos C, 8; Erna F, 5; Naomi M, 3. William’s father was a farmer. [1]

William’s father Frederick died in 1907.

William Schumm was enumerated with his step-mother and siblings in 1910: Mary, 49; William, 25; Amos, 18; Erna, 15; and Naomi, 12. They lived on what was called Schumm Pike and William was a farmer. [2]

William Schumm married Amanda Reidenbach on 17 December 1911 and they had 3 children:

Reinhardt Waldo (1912-1986), married Frieda Oleta Etzler
Edgar F. Schumm (1914-1944)
Amanda Barbara (1916-1965) married Leonard Etzler

William’s wife Amanda (Reidenbach) Schumm died 17 August 1916, at the age of 27. She died a few hours after the birth of their third child and is buried in row 10 of Zion Schumm’s cemetery.

Widower William Schumm married Mina Gunsett on 2 May 1918 in Van Wert County, Ohio. [3]

Minnie “Mina“ Katharine Gunsett was the daughter of Jacob Gunsett and Magdalena Schmidt, born in Van Wert County on 26 September 1886.

By 1910 Mina, 23, had moved to Los Angeles, California, where she worked as a servant in the Robert Cuzner household: Robert L Cuzner 52; Alvena Cuzner, 41; Margaret Cuzner, 13; William G Cuzner, 17; and Mina C Gunsett, 23, born in Ohio. [5]

Mina returned to Van Wert County by 1918 and married William Schumm.

Their son Edgar Schumm was killed in France in 1944, during World War II.

Mina (Gunsett) Schumm died in the Van Wert County Hospital on 19 October 1946. She was buried on the 23rd, with Rev. A.P. Schlegel in charge of the services.

William Schumm died 15 September 1961 in Van Wert. William’s obituary:

L. WILLIAM SCHUMM
Rockford- L. William Schumm, 77, a retired farmer and former resident of Rockford, died at 2:30 a.m. Friday in the Van Rue Geriatric Center in Van Wert, where he had been a patient nine days.

Mr. Schumm was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Willshire. He was born Aug. 16, 1884, in Rockford, a son of Frederick and Margaret Ehrenmann Schumm.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Willshire, Rev. E.H. Zacharias will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Those who wish to do so may make memorial contributions to the Cancer Society.

Surviving are three sons, Reinhardt of Convoy, Richard of Detroit, and Elmer of Rockford Rt. 2; two daughters, Mrs. Leonard Etzler of Convoy ad Mrs. Jack Shaffer of Van Wert; one brother, Amos of Rockford Rt. 2; three sisters, Mrs. Maria S. Dietrich, Mrs. Erna Schumm, and Mrs. Naomi Schumm both of Willshire and seven grandchildren. Calling hours at the Ketcham Funeral Home, Rockford, are from 10:30 a.m. Saturday until noon Sunday when the body will be removed to the church. [9]
