Local Buildings by Abraham Bagley

Last week I wrote about Zion Lutheran’s church school in Chattanooga, Ohio, designed by Berne architect Abraham Bagley in 1904. 

That information was brought to my attention by a reader from Berne who is restoring an historic house that Bagley designed. She also sent me photos of some other area buildings that Bagley designed.

The old Monroe Township school in Berne, built in 1910, last used as an Amish house but currently abandoned:

Abraham Bagley also designed St. John’s Reformed Church in Defiance, Ohio, in 1910 and St. John’s Reformed in Archbold, Ohio, in 1914-15.

Below is some additional information I found about architect Abraham Bagley:

Abraham Bagley was born in Switzerland in January 1870 [1], the son of Peter and Magdalene (Klay) Bagley. He immigrated to America in the late 1800s and married Bertha Clara Gilliam in Berne, Indiana, on 5 November 1893. [2]

In 1900 Abraham Bagley and his family lived in Berne with two Gilliam in-laws, likely Bertha’s siblings. Abraham and Bertha had been married 6 years and no occupation was given for Abraham in this census enumeration. The Bagley family in 1900: Abraham, 30, Switzerland; Bertha C, 26, Missouri; Lila E, 5, Indiana; Martha A, 2, Indiana; Edwin H Gilliam, 22, single, Missouri, brother-in-law, brick hauler; and Sarah M Gilliam, 23, single, Missouri, sister-in-law, dry goods clerk. [1]

In 1910 the Abraham Bagley family resided on Franklin Street in Berne. Abraham’s occupation was architect. This enumeration indicates that he immigrated in 1889 and had been married 16 years. The two Gilliam women living with them are listed as boarders and both were clerks/sales at a notions store. Both women were born in Missouri, as was Abraham’s wife Bertha (Gilliam), and possibly were sisters. The Bagley family in 1910: Abraham, 40; Bertha, 36; Lila E, 15; Martha A, 12; Victor F, 9; Nora M, 6; Harman N, 2; Glennis J, 1 month; Martha N Gilliam, 27; and Emma R Gilliam, 25. [3]  

In 1920 the Abraham Bagley lived on Fulton Street in Berne. This enumeration indicates that Abraham was born in Switzerland, spoke German, and immigrated in 1895. [This date is incorrect because he married in Indiana in 1893.] His occupation was civil engineer. The Bagley family in 1920: Abraham, 49; Bertha, 48; Nora, 15; Harman, 12; Glennis, 9. [4]

In 1931 Bagley, age 60, was living alone in Fort Wayne, where he operated a saw sharpening shop in his home. He was incarcerated for public intoxication and hung himself in the Fort Wayne City Jail on 30 July 1931. [5]

Abraham and Bertha (Gillium) Bagley had the following children:

His two sons also went into the engineering/construction building business.

Tombstone Tuesday-Ferd W. & Amber F. (Tickle) Schumm

This is the tombstone of Ferd W. and Amber F. (Tickle) Schumm, located in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, Mercer County, Ohio. The marker is inscribed:

Ferdinand Wilhelm “ Ferd“ Schumm was born 15 May 1885, the son of Frederick Jacob and Maria (Germann) Schumm. He was baptized at home on 17 May 17 1885 with Ferdinand Germann and Wilhelm Schumm serving as his sponsors.

The Jacob F Schumm family in 1900, when Ferd was 15 years old: Jacob Schumm, 60; Mary, 52; George, 32; Amelia, 27; Ida, 23; Mary, 20; Philip, 17; and Ferd, 15. This enumeration indicates that Jacob and Mary had been married years and that Mary had given birth to 9 children, all of whom were living. [1]

The Jacob F Schumm family in 1910: Fred, 70; Mary, 62; Ida C, 31; Ferd W 24. Fred was a farmer and the couple had been married 44 years. [2]

Ferd Schumm married Amber Forest Tickle on 26 March 1912 at Zion Schumm’s parsonage. Witnesses to the marriage were Walter and Esther Schumm. Ferd and Amber were both from Mercer County. The church records note that the service was in English.

“Amber” Forest Tickle was born in Mercer County, Ohio, on 3 January 1892, the daughter of Jacob (1847-1894) and Isadora (Dudgeon) (1849-1924). Amber’s father died two years later.

Amber and her family in 1900: Isadora A Tickle, 49; Almina E, 29; Jesse A, 21; Leroy, 11; and Amber F, 8. Isadora was a widow and had given birth to 5 children, all of whom were living. All members of the household were born in Ohio. [3]

The Tickle family in 1910, living on Winkler Road, Black Creek Township: Isadora A, 59, head, widow; Minna E, 35, daughter; Leroy F, 21, son; Amber F, 18, daughter; Grace W, 18, daughter-in-law [wife of Leroy]; Helen A Tickle, 1, granddaughter; and James Tickle, under one month, grandson. This enumeration indicates the mother Isadora had given birth to seven children, 5 of whom were living. [4]

After their marriage Ferd and Amber set up housekeeping in Dublin Township, Mercer County, where Ferd was a farmer and also was a stock and grain dealer. Their family in 1920: Ferd W Schumm, 35; and Amber F, 29. [5]

Ferd Schumm died 5 June 1970 in a long-term care facility in Coldwater. He was 85 years old. His obituary:

Celina-Services for Ferdinand W. Schumm, 85, of 208 E. Fulton will be 2 p.m. Monday in W.H Dick and Sons Funeral Home, Rev. Jay Stratton officiating. Burial will in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Mr. Schumm died 5:30 p.m. Friday at Briarwood Manor, Coldwater. Born May 15, 1885, in Dublin Township, Mercer County, he was the son of J. Frederick and Mary Germann Schumm. He was married May 26, 1912 to Amber Tickle and she survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Paul E. (Dorothy) Shaffer of Fort Wayne; a sister, Mrs. Mary Weck of Ohio; and two granddaughters.

Friends may call at the funeral home 2-5 and 7-9 today. [8]

Amber (Tickle) Schumm died 24 October 1982 in a long-term care facility in Mercer County. She was 89 years old.

Jacob Frederick Schumm was born 12 June 1839 in Van Wert County, Ohio, the son of George Martin and Maria (Pflueger) Schumm. He went by the name Jacob, Jacob F, and/or Jacob Frederick, or a combination of those names. Both of his parents were German immigrants. The Schumms immigrated to America in 1833 and lived in Holmes County, Ohio, before settling in Van Wert County about 1837.

The George Schumm family in 1850, when Jacob Frederick was 11 years old: George, 38; Mary, 30; Fred, 11; Louis, 9; George, 8; John, 6; Rosina, 5; Margaret, 2; Mary, 1; Elizabeth Flecker [Pflueger], 14; and Jacob Bentz [Bienz], 24. The father George was a farmer. [1] Wife and mother Mary (Pflueger) Schumm was the sister of Elizabeth Pflueger. Elizabeth Pflueger and Jacob Bienz married a year later.

The George Schumm family in 1860: George, 47; Mary, 46; Frederick, 21; Louis, 19; George, 18; John, 17; Rosina, 15; Mary, 11; Jacob, 9; Christina, 7; Henry, 5; and Martin, 4 months. [2]  

Jacob Frederick Schumm married Mary Germann in Van Wert County on 27 April 1866. [3]

Maria “Mary” Germann was born in Van Wert County, Ohio, on 3 Jun 1847, the daughter of Frederick “Carl” Philip and Anna Elizabeth (Germann) Germann.

Soon after their marriage Jacob Frederick and Mary (Germann) Schumm moved to Dublin Township, in neighboring Mercer County and they had a Shanes Crossing postal address. They resided near Rockford the rest of their married life.

Their family in 1870, four years after their marriage: Jacob Frederick, 31; Mary, 23; George, 2; and Rosina, 1. Jacob F was a farmer. [6]

Daughter “Ida” Carolina Margaretha Schumm was born near Rockford, Ohio, on 26 March 1877. She was baptized 2 April 1877, with Mrs. Margaretha Schumm, Carolina Germann, and Mrs. Margaretha Germann serving as her sponsors.

The Jacob F Schumm family in 1880: Jacob F, 41; Mary, 33; George, 12; Rosina, 11; Louise, 9; Amelia, 7; Charly, 5; Ida, 3; and Mary, 6 months. All family members were born in Ohio and Jacob was a farmer. [7]

The Jacob F Schumm family in 1900: Jacob Schumm, 60; Mary, 52; George, 32; Amelia, 27; Ida, 23; Mary, 20; Philip, 17; and Ferdinand, 15. This enumeration indicates that Jacob and Mary had been married years and that Mary had given birth to 9 children, all of whom were living. [8]

Maria (Germann) Schumm (1847-1915), son TFerdinand Schumm (1885-1970), J “Frederick” Schumm (1839-1927, s/o Geo Martin Schumm & Maria Pflueger) Lived on Township Line Rd, south of 33.

Their daughter Ida Schumm died near Willshire, Van Wert County, of uterine cancer on 14 June 1914. Zion Schumm’s records indicate she died of consumption. She was 37 years old, single, and her occupation was domestic. Ida may have been living with the Henry Schinnerer family when she died, since Henry was the informant on her death certificate. She was buried on the 15th. Church records indicate that she was survived by 4 brothers and 4 sisters. [10]

Ida’s mother Maria (Germann) Schumm died in Mercer County on 24 January 1915 after a lingering illness. She was buried on the 26th. She was survived by her husband and eight children. 

In 1920, widower Jacob Frederick resided in Van Wert County, near Willshire, living with his grandson William Schinnerer and William’s wife Martha (Schinnerer): William Schinnerer, 26, head; Martha Schinnerer, 26, wife; and Frederick Schumm, 80, widowed, relationship reported as father-in-law. [11] William Schinnerer was the son of Frederick’s daughter Maria “Louise” Schumm (1870-1952), who married Henry Friedrich Schinnerer

Jacob Frederick Schumm died 24 August 1927.

Old Photo of Chatt Bar

Today, an old photo from Chattanooga, Ohio, taken in front of the Chatt Bar some time before 1918. As far as I know, the Chatt Bar has always been in the same location.

This photo is from Doug Roebuck. It is interesting to see the unusual shape of the roof-line, the hitching post with a horse tied tied to it, and a sign in the window-Smokes and Liquor. 

There are seven men standing in front of the building. Doug can identify one person in the photo, his great-grandfather Fred Heffner, the man with a mustache standing to the far right. Fred Heffner owned the establishment at the time.

Doug wonders who the other men in the photo are. 

Maybe some of you have seen this photo before and can identify the other men.

Doug Roebuck is also a Merkle descendant. Merkle & Egger once owned and operated a grocery in Chatt and ran a huckster wagon in the area.

“Philip” Frederick Martin Schumm was born in Dublin Township, Mercer County, Ohio, on 12 September 1882, the son of Frederick Jacob and Maria (Germann) Schumm.  Philip was baptized at home on 24 September 1882 with Philip Germann, Frederick Schumm Jr, and Martin Schumm serving as his sponsors.

Philip Schumm, enumerated with his family in 1900: Frederick J Schumm, 60; Mary, 52; George, 32; Amelia, 27; Ida, 23; Mary, 20; Philip, 17; and Ferdinand, 15. [1]

Philip F. Schumm married Leona Schumm on 5 Nov 1907 at Zion Schumm’s parsonage.

“Leona” Barbara Schumm was born 18 September 1877, the daughter of Frederick (Jr) and Margaret Ehrenmann. Leona was baptized 30 September 1877 with Barbara Schumm and Katherine Bienz serving as her sponsors.

Leona Schumm, enumerated with her family in 1880, residing on the family farm in Black Creek Township, Mercer County: Frederick Schumm, 35; Margaret, 33; Catharine, 6; Hugo, 4; Leona, 2; and Henrietta, 10 months. [2]

Leona’s mother Margaret (Ehrenmann) Schumm died 27 June 1885 and in 1888 her father married Mary Catherine Buchner.

The Frederick Schumm Jr family in 1900: Frederick, 56; Mary, 39; Hugo A, 24; Leona B, 22; Henrietta A, 20; Lawrence W, 15; Amos C, 8; Erna F, 5; Naomi M, 3. Leona had 5 full siblings and 3 step-siblings living at this time. [3]

Leona died in Celina, Ohio, on 4 October 1958. Leona (Schumm) Schumm’s obituary:

Mrs. Leona Schumm, 81, a lifetime resident of Rt. 2, Rockford, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Gibbons Hospital in Celina following a stroke.

She was born Sept. 18, 1877 in Blackcreek Township.

She was married Nov. 5, 1907 to Phillip [sic] Schumm who survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Marie Fuelling of Decatur, Ind., Mrs. Emma Boerger of Decatur, Ind., Mrs. Ann Boschoss [sic] of Monroeville, Ind. And Velma at home; eight grandchildren, two brothers Amos Schumm of Rt. 2, Rockford and William Schumm, Van Wert, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Dietrich of Willshire, Mrs. Emma Schumm of Willshire and Mrs. Naomi Schumm of Willshire.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Ketcham Funeral Home in Rockford until 1 p.m. when the body will be removed to the church. [8]

Philip Schumm died in Rockford, Ohio, on 29 December 1968. Philip Schumm’s obituary:

PHILIP F. SCHUMM
Rockford- Philip F. Schumm, 86, of Rt. 2, Rockford, died at 5 pm. Sunday at Smith’s Nursing Home where he had been a patient for about a week.

Born Sept. 12, 1882, he was the son of J.F. and Maria (Germann) Schumm. He was a lifetime resident of the vicinity, and was a farmer.

His marriage to Leona Schumm was solemnized Nov. 5, 1907. Mrs. Schumm died Oct. 4, 1858.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Erwin (Maria) Fuelling of Rt. 5, Decatur, Mrs. Otto (Emma) Boerger of Rt. 3, Decatur, Miss Velma Schumm at home and Mrs. Arthur (Anna) Bischoff of Benson, Ariz.; a brother, F.W. Schumm of Celina; a sister, Mrs. Fred Weck of Rt. 2, Ohio City, and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Schumm was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Rt. 1, Willshire.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Herbert G. Walther officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
