KRUECKEBERG
Walter
May 9, 1910

Helen
Aug 28, 1911
July 12, 1999

Walter Friedrich Krueckeberg was born in Van Wert County, Ohio, on 9 May 1910, the fifth child of Carl H. (1877-1943) and Vilenna M. (Bienz) (1879-1964) Krueckeberg. Walter was baptized 22 May 1910 at Zion Lutheran Church, Schumm, with Friedrich Bienz and Friedrich Thieme serving as his baptismal sponsors.

The 1910 census was enumerated in Willshire Township the very same day Walter Krueckeberg was born. Walter was apparently born after census taker Clyde Jones took the Carl Krueckeberg family information, and as a result, Walter was not enumerated in that census. On that census day Carl and Vilenna Krueckeberg indicated that they had 4 children. That must have been a busy and hectic day for the Carl Krueckeberg family, having a new baby as well as a visit from the census taker.

Walter Krueckeberg was enumerated in the next U.S. Census, the 1920 census, with his parents and siblings: Charles/Carl Krueckeberg, 42; Vilenna, 40; Leo, 17; Hugo, 16; Elvira, 13; Henoch, 11; Walter, 9; and Loretta, 2. The father Carl was a farmer. [1] By 1930 all but two of the Krueckeberg children had left home. Just Walter, age 20, and his sister Luetta, 12, resided at home with their parents Carl and Vilenna. [2]

Walter Krueckeberg married Helen Backus 28 March 1937. [3]

Helen was born in New Bremen, Auglaize County, Ohio, 28 August 1911, the daughter of Harry H. (1882-1955) and Emma (Harlamert) (1888-1954) Backus.

By 1920 the Harry Backus family had moved to Convoy, Van Wert County, Ohio, where they resided on Walnut Street: Harry, 37 head; Emma, 31, wife; Helen, 8, daughter; Wilma, 5, daughter; Anna R, 1, daughter; and Georgianna Backus, 62, mother. The father Harry was a Watkins salesman. [4]

By 1930 the Harry Backus family had moved again, moving to Maple Street in Convoy: Harry H, 47; Emma, 41; Helen G, 18; Wilma, 15; Anna R, 11; James H McCullough, 26, boarder; and Robert L Fogt, 23, boarder. The father Harry did cabinetry in a factory and daughter Helen was a clerk in a dry goods store. [5]

At the time of their 1937 marriage Walter Krueckeberg lived in Willshire Township and his bride Helen Backus lived in Convoy. Walter was a farmer and Helen worked as a clerk. [3]

I found their wedding announcement in a newspaper. They married on Easter Sunday morning. Remember when wedding announcements like this were published:

Helen Backus, Walter Krueckeberg Marriage Solemnized Yesterday
Vows Exchanged in Emanuel Lutheran Parsonage Easter Morn
An early Eastern [sic] morning wedding was solemnized at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the parsonage of Emanuel Lutheran church on West Maple avenue when Miss Helen Backus, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Backus of Convoy became the bride of Walter Krueckeberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Krueckeberg of near Willshire. The Rev. Herold Kramer, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran church read the single ring ceremony which was witnessed by the attendants, Miss Wilma Backus, sister of the bride, and Henoch Krueckeberg, the bridegroom’s brother.

The bride’s gown was of Bernese blue knife-pleated chiffon and with it she wore accessories of light grey. Her flowers were a corsage of Talisman roses and sweet peas. Her sister wore a gown of French rose with navy accessories. Her flowers were briarcliff roses.

Mrs. Krueckeberg a graduate of Convoy-Tully high school, is employed as a saleswoman at the J.P. Skinner and company store. Mr. Krueckeberg was graduated from Willshire high school. He is a well known Willshire township farmer.

A three course wedding dinner was served at noon Sunday at the home of the bride’s parents in Convoy with members of the immediate families as guests. The dinner appointments were carried out in a pink and white color note which was also evident in the table centerpiece which was an arrangement of pink roses and snapdragons in two crystal bowls.

Mr. and Mrs. Krueckeberg left Sunday afternoon for a wedding trip to points in southern Ohio and in Kentucky and after their return will be at home on a farm in Willshire township. [6]

By 1940 Walter and Helen had one child, James. The Walter Krueckeberg family in 1940: Walter, 29; Helen, 28; and James E, 9 months. Walter was a farmer. [7]

By 1950 Walter and Helen had 3 children: James E, 10; Janice Ann, 6; and Kenneth C, 2. Walter continued to farm. [8]

Walter & Helen Krueckeberg, 1971 Zion Lutheran, Schumm, directory.

Walter and Helen were active members of Zion Lutheran Church, Schumm.

Helen died in a long-term care facility in Mercer County 12 July 1999, at the age of 87.

Walter died in a long-term care facility in Van Wert County on 29 December 2000, at the age of 90.

Walter and Helen (Backus) Krueckeberg had three children: James, Janice, and Kenneth.

It is interesting to note that one of Helen (Backus) Krueckeberg’s two sisters, Anna Ruth Backus (1919-1970), married Adolph Ferdinand Dietrich (1918-2000), son of Henry Jacob (1869-1935) and Maria Elizabeth (Schumm) (1881-1966) Dietrich.

School Children at Schumm, 1847

This roster of school children is included in Zion Lutheran Schumm’s church records, a list of children, 9 boys and 11 girls, who attended the parochial school at Schumm. The roster also includes their dates of birth. The list itself is not dated but the children range in age from 6-15 years, their birth dates ranging from 1832-1841. That nine-year age range would correspond to grades 1 through 8. Back then, completion of the 8th grade was the highest level of education most children received.

1847 School Children, Zion Lutheran, Schumm

Considering all those things, this list is probably from about 1847.

The birth information on this roster predates the oldest of Zion Schumm’s records that survive, records that begin in 1845.

Zion Schumm’s minister was probably the schoolteacher. It was not uncommon for a minister to teach school since he was usually one of the best educated persons in the area. Zion Schumm’s minister during that time was Rev. John G. Streckfuss, their pastor from 1847-1856.

The school roster is divided into two columns, boys and girls. Below is the list as recorded in the church records, with the child’s name and date of birth. I am unsure of a couple of the surnames.

Boys:

Billman, Joseph, 2 Oct 1833
Schueler, Georg, 1 May 1834
Billmann, Heinrich, 26 Dec 1837
Schumm, Friedrich, 12 Jun 1839
Schumm, Daniel, 2 Mar 1840
Billmann, Friedrich, 16 Feb 1840
Schumm, Wilhelm, 16 Sep 1840
Schumm, Ludwig, 25 Nov 1840
Samuel Leininger, 27 May 1838

Girls:

Dietrich, Mar Cath [Maria Catharine], 6 Apr 1832
Billmann, Isabella, 4 Oct 1835
Pflueger, Elisabeth, 28 Jul 1835
Schueler, Magdalena, 3 Nov 1835
Norten [?] Stoker [?], Catharine, 11 Jul 1836
Schueler, Rosina, 17 Aug 1837
Scheck, Caroline, 15 Sep 1837
Haeberle, Rachel, 16 Oct 1835
Schueler, Maria, 17 Feb 1840
Haeberle, Susanna, 10 Sep 1841
Roth, Catharine, 16 Jul 1832

On the list below I have included some additional information about the school children, if I could find additional information. Some of the birth dates disagree slightly with some other records.

Boys:

  • Joseph Billmann (2 Oct/2 Jul 1833-9 May 1875), s/o Michael Billmann
  • Georg Schueler (1 May 1834-9 Feb 1893), s/o Michael & Maria Katherine (Schumm) Schueler; m. Anna Maria Barbara Furhmann
  • Heinrich Billmann, 26 Dec 1837
  • Jacob “Friedrich” Schumm (12 Jun 1839-24 Aug 1927), s/o George Martin & Maria (Pflueger) Schumm; m. Maria Germann
  • Daniel Schumm (2 Mar 1840-8 Feb 1863), s/o Johann Jacob & Hannah (Billman) Schumm
  • Friedrich Billmann (16/19 Feb 1840-19 Apr 1913), s/o Michael Billmann; m. Elizabeth Casto
  • Wilhelm Schumm (16 Sep 1840-28 Dec 1906), s/o Johann Friedrich & Magdalena (Meyer) Schumm; m. Anna Maria Heffner

  • Isabella Billmann (4 Oct 1835-16 Feb 1885), d/o Michael Billmann; m. Henry Volland
  • Elisabeth Pflueger (28/30 Jul 1835-6 Feb 1913) d/o Christian & Anna Barbara (Sekel) Pflueger; m. Jacob Bienz
  • Magdalena Schueler (3 Nov 1835-21 Sep 1916), d/o Michael & Maria Katherine (Schumm) Schueler; married John Bienz
  • Catharine Norten/Stoker, 11 Jul 1836
  • Rosina K. Schueler (17 Aug 1837-11 Feb 1912), d/o Michael & Maria Katherine (Schumm) Schueler; married Henry William Christian Meyer
  • Caroline Scheck, 15 Sep 1837
  • Rachel Haeberle, 16 Oct 1835
  • Maria Schueler (17 Feb 1840-), [probably Hannah Marie], d/o Michael & Catharine (Lakehard) Schueler
  • Susanna Haeberle, 10 Sep 1841
  • Catharine Roth (16 Jul 1832-)

Early lists like this are very helpful for genealogy research. They not only indicate who lived in the area and went to church at Zion Schumm, but this list goes even farther and gives the students’ birth dates. And, because these children attended school in about 1847, we know they were alive at that point in time. Sometimes individuals disappear between census enumerations, which were taken every ten years. The tombstone of a child who died between the censuses in the 1800s may not have survived and we may not know what happened to an individual. From this list we know that these children were alive in about 1847.

Tombstone Tuesday-Hugo F. Krueckeberg

Hugo F. Krueckeberg, Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Van Wert County, Ohio (2012 photo by Karen)

This is the tombstone of Hugo F. Krueckeberg, located in row 9 of Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Van Wert County, Ohio. The marker is inscribed:

HUGO F.
KRUECKEBERG
Dec. 27, 1903-Oct. 5, 1985
The Lord is my Shepherd

“Hugo“ Friedrich Krueckeberg was born 27 December 1903, the second child born to Carl H. (1877-1943) and Vilenna M. (Bienz) (1879-1964) Krueckeberg. Hugo was baptized at the home of his parents on 10 January 1904 with Friedrich Krueckeberg and William Schamerloh serving as his baptismal sponsors. The church records note that both sponsors were from Adams County, Indiana. Additional research shows that his sponsor William Schamerloh (1859-1932) was married to Anna Bienz (1866-1942), the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Pflueger) Bienz, making William Schamerloh the granduncle of Hugo Krueckeberg by marriage.

Hugo Krueckeberg, age 6, with his family in Willshire Township in 1910: Carl H Krueckeberg, 33, head; Vilenna, 30, wife; Leo Krueckeberg, 7, son; Hugo Krueckeberg, 6, son; Elvira Krueckeberg, 4, daughter; Henoch Krueckeberg, 1, son; Elizabeth Bienz, 75, [Vilenna’s] grandmother; Earl Roehm, 17, hired hand; and Della Roehm, 23, servant. Carl Krueckeberg was a farmer. [1]

Carl and Vilenna Krueckeberg continued to reside in Willshire Township and were enumerated there with their 6 children in 1920. By 1929 Hugo Krueckeberg had moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and resided at 934 Savilla Avenue and worked as a winder at Dudlo Manufacturing. [2]

In 1930 Hugo, 26, and his brother Henoch, 21, were lodgers in the home of Archie Hileman and family, 934 Savilla Avenue, Fort Wayne: Archie C Hileman, 28, head; Reah B Hileman, 27, wife; Keith W Hileman, 5, son; Philip L Hileman, 1 month, son; Clyde L Siler, 28, lodger; John V Siler, 23, lodger; Henoch E Krueckeberg, 21, lodger; Hugo Krueckeberg, 26, lodger; Ormond Burdick, 24, lodger; Charles P Persing, 59, lodger; and Etta E Persing, 62, lodger. Archie Hileman, the Krueckeberg brothers, and the Siler brothers worked as assemblers in a truck factory. [3]

Hugo Krueckeberg, 36, single, returned to Willshire Township by 1940 and resided with his parents. In fact, that census indicates that Hugo resided in their Willshire Township home in 1935. It appears that Hugo’s father Carl had retired from farming by 1940 and that Hugo had taken over the farming. [4]

According to Hugo’s WWII Draft Registration card, Hugo farmed 5 miles west of Ohio City, in Van Wert County. In 1942 Hugo’s draft classification was 1-A [5], but it appears he did not serve in the military.

Hugo’s father Carl Krueckeberg died on 5 January 1943.

In 1950 Hugo, 46, son, who had never married, lived with his widowed mother Vilenna, 70, head, in Willshire Township. Hugo worked as laborer for a container company. Hugo and his mother lived next to Hugo’s brother Walter and his family. [6]

In 1953 Hugo was the best man at the Christmas Day marriage of Albert Roehm and Ruth Myer. [7]

Hugo’s mother Vilenna (Bienz) Krueckeberg died on 2 November 1964.

The container company mentioned above in the 1950 census was Van Wert’s Continental Can Company. In 1967 Hugo Krueckeberg was one of 49 employees who were initiated into the company’s Veterans Club, signifying 25 years of service with the company. For that, each received a scroll, a diamond-studded gold lapel pin or brooch, and a gold Omega wristwatch. [8]

Hugo Krueckeberg, 1971 Zion Lutheran, Schumm, directory.

Hugo Krueckeberg died in the Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert, from complications of a cerebral hemorrhage on 5 October 1985, at the age of 81. He was buried on the 9th. Hugo never married and was a wire winder at Continental Can. [9]

Hugo Krueckeberg had the following siblings:
Leo Charles Krueckeberg (1902-1970), married Helen Henrietta Miller
Elvira Carolina Krueckeberg (1906-1989), married Maurice Malcom Markle
Henoch Ernst Krueckeberg (1908-1996), married Ruth Schultz
Walter Friedrich Kreuckeberg (1910-2000), married Helen G. Backus

Happy Easter!

Today is Good Friday, the day Christians observe when our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins.

But on the third day,  our Easter Sunday, He rose from the dead and we celebrate His resurrection.

He is risen. He is risen indeed.

Easter Blessings to all!

Tombstone Tuesday-Carl H. & Vilenna M. (Bienz) Krueckeberg

Carl H. & Vilenna M. (Bienz) Krueckeberg, Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Van Wert County, Ohio. (2012 photo by Karen)

This is the tombstone of Carl H. and Vilenna M. (Bienz) Krueckeberg, located in row 2 of Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Van Wert County, Ohio. The marker is inscribed:

KRUECKEBERG
Carl H.
1877-1943
Vilenna M.
1879-1964

Charles “Carl” H. Krueckeberg was born in Van Wert County, Ohio, on 27 Mar 1877, the son of Charles/Carl Henrich W. (1835-1915) and Caroline Wilhelmine (Kleinschmidt) Krueckeberg (1834-1913).

The Charles Krueckeberg family in 1880: Charles [Sr], 45, born in Germany; Caroline, 45, Germany; Fredrick, 19; Sophia, 17; Louisa, 17; Minnie, 12; Ernst, 8; and Carl [Jr], 3. All the children were born in Indiana and their father was a farmer. [1] In 1900 Carl Krueckeberg [Jr] lived with his parents and extended family in Union Township, Adams County, Indiana.

Carl Krueckeberg [Jr] married Mary “Vilenna” Bienz at her grandparents’ home in Van Wert County on 22 August 1901. Carl was from Adams County, Indiana, and Vilenna was from Zion Schumm’s parish.

Vilenna Bienz was born in Van Wert County on 19 Jul 1879, the daughter of John Lewis (1852-1940) and Mary (Chilcoat) Bienz (c1859-c1881).

Vilenna Bienz, with her family, in 1880, residing in Willshire: JL [John Lewis] Bienz, 28, born in Ohio; Anna, 22, wife, Ohio; Mary V [Vilenna], 11 months, Ohio, born in July. John Bienz’s occupation was a house carpenter. [2]

Zion Schumm’s records indicate that Vilenna’s mother Ann Mary (Chilcoat) Bienz died before Vilenna’s baptism at Zion Schumm on 3 December 1882. Maria Bienz and Mrs. Katharina Roehm [?] served as Vilenna’s baptismal sponsors. The church records indicate that Vilenna’s grandparents Jacob and Elizabeth (Pflueger) Bienz had taken in Vilenna to raise.

In 1900 Vilenna Bienz lived with her grandparents, Jacob and Elizabeth (Pflueger) Bienz: Jacob, 75; Elisabeth, 64; and Mary V [Vilenna], 20. [3]

Meanwhile, Vilenna’s widowed father John L. Bienz had remarried in 1890, to Elizabeth Hixon. In 1900 John Lewis Bienz and wife “Lizzie” lived in Indianapolis, Indiana: John, 47, born June 1852 in Ohio; and Lizzie, wife, 38, born April 1862 in Indiana. They had been married 10 years and had no children. John reportedly worked as a machinist. [4]

Seven years after Carl and Vilenna married, Vilenna’s grandfather Jacob Bienz died in 1908. In 1910 Vilenna’s widowed grandmother Elizabeth (Pflueger) Bienz resided with Vilenna and Carl Krueckeberg and their children: Carl H Krueckeberg, 33; Vilenna, 30; Leo Krueckeberg, 7; Hugo Krueckeberg, 6; Elvira Krueckeberg, 4; Henoch Krueckeberg, 1; Elizabeth Bienz, 75, grandmother; Earl Roehm, 17, hired hand; and Della Roehm, 23, servant. Carl Krueckeberg was a farmer. [5]

Vilenna’s grandmother Elizabeth (Pflueger) Bienz died in 1913.

Carl and Vilenna continued to reside in Willshire Township, in 1920 with their 6 children, and by 1930 only their two youngest children resided with them. Son Hugo Krueckeberg, age 36 and single, was their only child living with them in 1940. It appears that Carl had retired from farming by that time and that Hugo had taken over the farming. [6]

Carl Krueckeberg died from colon cancer in Decatur, Indiana, on 5 January 1943, aged 65. He was buried on the 7th. [7]

Vilenna Krueckeberg died at a long-term care facility in Alllen County, Ohio, on 2 November 1964, at the age of 85. [8]

Carl and Vilenna (Bienz) Krueckeberg had the following children:
Leo Charles Krueckeberg (1902-1970), married Helen Henrietta Miller
Hugo Friedrich Krueckeberg (1903-1985)
Elvira Carolina Krueckeberg (1906-1989), married Maurice Malcom Markle
Henoch Ernst Krueckeberg (1908-1996), married Ruth Schultz
Walter Friedrich Kreuckeberg (1910-2000), married Helen G. Backus
